Becoming Lydia Wiebe Photography Pt. 2- The People

Memories. They’re so important! Today, I’m sharing a bit about the people in my life, because to talk about my journey into photography wouldn’t be complete without talking about the ones who inspired me and helped me become the photographer I am now!

First of all, my parents. They’re the ones who bought me my first camera, but beyond that, they’re the ones who first instilled in me a love for capturing memories.

Mom has filled our home with pictures, whether it’s the newborn pictures that are in our hallway, the family pictures by the dining room table, the pictures that are stuck onto our fridge with magnets, or the scrapbooks filled with memories, Mom has shown me how important it is to document life.

As for Dad, I can remember little trips he took with me to out of the way places to see what kind of wildlife we would see and be able to capture. He also enjoys taking pictures. His favorite thing is windmills. He can hardly drive by one, especially if there is a sunset behind it!

But the person who got me started with people photography, is my sister-in-law. It was my niece’s first Christmas, and Liliana wanted to get some pictures for Christmas cards. Not wanting to hire a professional and knowing I had a camera, she asked if I would take some. Even though I wasn’t interested in getting into something like that for real, I said I would. And I had high hopes for how these pictures where going to turn out. Needless to say, they didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to. They were indoor, shot with a point and shoot camera, with an energetic little girlie, and all of that added up to a disappointed photographer. My very first photo shoot is definitely one of the things that got me started with wanting to actually take pictures of people. (I still take Jacob and Liliana’s pictures, but they’ve much improved since then!)

My other sister-in-law also trusted me before I was anywhere close to being where I wanted to be. I’ve been able to document Lucas and Helen’s relationship from before they were engaged, to my most recent photo shoot with them of their second baby boy!

There are many other people in. my life that have contributed to me being where I am now, maybe with simply believing in me, trusting me to take their pictures, allowing me to use them as guinea pigs, and being an encouragement to me!

I’m so thankful for the people God put in my life who have helped me along my journey as a photographer!
